David Rockwell, FAIA, is the founder and President of Rockwell Group, an award-winning, cross-disciplinary architecture and design practice based in New York with satellite offices in Madrid and Shanghai. The firm crafts a unique narrative for each project through the intersection of theater and architecture.
Projects include Nobu restaurants worldwide and hotels in Las Vegas, Manila, Miami and Chicago; W Hotels (New York, Paris, Singapore, Vieques and Madrid); The New York EDITION; TED Theater (Vancouver, BC); NeueHouse (New York, Los Angeles and London); the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center at Lincoln Center; the Imagination Playground initiative; 15 Hudson Yards and Culture Shed at Hudson Yards in collaboration with Diller Scofidio + Renfro; and set designs for the Broadway productions of She Loves Me, Kinky Boots and Hairspray.
Product design is a natural extension of our immersive environments and we design touchpoints that create visual dialogues with those and other designers’ environments. From surface and floor coverings for Maya Romanoff, Shaw Hospitality Group, The Rug Company, and Jim Thompson, to lighting for Rich Brilliant Willing and Gaia & Gino, and furniture for Stellar Works, we start with a need in the marketplace and the relationship with our collaborators.
David’s honors include the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter’s President’s Award; the National Design Award by the Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum; the Pratt Legends Award; the Presidential Design Award; and induction into the James Beard Foundation Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America. David serves as Chair Emeritus of the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA) and as a board member of Citymeals-on-Wheels, Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, and New York Restoration Project. David is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.

“Gaia&Gino was founded in 2004 in Istanbul, Turkey, with a contemporary sensibility that fuses traditional cultural elements with experimental design. Rockwell Group’s emphasis on storytelling, materiality, craftsmanship, and witty invention makes us the perfect collaborators for Gaia&Gino, which is stationed between heritage and modernism and handicraft production and high technology. Our first collection for Gaia&Gino—three high-end LED lighting solutions in beautiful finishes—is the result of a longtime partnership and provides outdoor, floor, and table accents at various scales.

Our inspiration for the collection comes from the dialogue that happens when bent and folded organic, lyrical forms meet industrial materials and fabrication processes. Each of our three lights has a dynamic form that keeps the eye moving.”
